City College Plymouth is a large government funded college rated as “Good with outstanding features” by Ofsted (2016). It was established in 1889 and offers high quality courses accredited by QAA, Ofsted and other accrediting bodies in the UK. The College offers a wide range of courses at different levels, from business to engineering, pre-university to professional level. The College is particularly focusing on STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) with a new STEM building which opened on site in September 2017. The College is a partner college of Plymouth University, offering some courses in partnership with Plymouth University and works together with them closely on academic and international projects, ensuring smooth progression for students. Employability skills are considered fundamental to all education and training at City College Plymouth.

Studying abroad is never easy. You’ve got to learn to adapt to the new environment, overcome culture shock, and most of all, learn to be independent. Lucky for me, there was no need for me to worry about the nitty-gritty matters such as accommodation, transportation and university application. PDVL handled it all. They accompanied us from the airport all the way to the accommodation, which in my case, was the student hall. They even booked bank appointments for us to open bank accounts and so on. Apart from that, six months was definitely not enough time to decide which universities I wanted to apply to, considering I didn’t know much about the universities in the UK, their campuses, the city life and requirements. However, that all changed after I went on the three day university trip with PDVL, visiting numerous universities in the UK. It really familiarised me with some of the top universities and made it easier for me when choosing one I really liked.

The word ‘New’ totally describes my experience in Plymouth with City College Plymouth. The class gives off a positive atmosphere. With the class so small, I feel comfortable clearing my doubt with the teachers. The school will expose you with the new teaching methods used in the UK’s university. The calming environment in Plymouth is really suitable for you to reflect on yourself, of course we sometimes feel confused especially in a totally new country. It gives you time to rethink of the passion you want to pursue and organize your thoughts. Overall, a good place to prepare yourself for university. I have find myself some new amazing friends there. We are even still in contact up until today. No matter the race or the religion, towards the end of the course we became inseparable and I am really glad to meet them there.

This programme is really good for those students who want to study overseas. I’m one of them. First, I didn’t expect it going to be this good. I used to think that business pathway is going to be serious. When I attended the first class, it was fantastic. I learned some new subjects which I never learned before including laws, accounting, business etc.

When I reflect on my six months in City College Plymouth IFC Programme, I conclude that the experience not only made me a better person, but also prepared me in unpredictable ways for my future career. Through projects with incredibly supportive classmates and lecturers, also my host family, I was challenged to discover a new voice that I didn’t know I had. A new voice that has played a role in helping me to think, plan, communicate and engage myself better in various situations. Having been shaped in part by the creative and lively, yet very distinct (in contrast to Indonesia) environment at Plymouth, I found myself feeling more confident in the abilities that I have inside. CCP has given me the best educational experience I have had.

At the beginning, I thought this programme will be very hard for me because everything will be in English. But after a month in there I found out that this is not as bad as I thought. Every person in here is very friendly and care of each other. The teacher is very friendly and very patient to teach me. And the accommodation is also fine, I stayed with a host family and the host family is very nice to me. The transportation on here is perfect for me, because if we want to go anywhere there a bus or a train with a reasonable price for student. What I got from this program is not only about knowledge but also the unforgettable memories. This program is very worth it for me. Thank you PDVL and City College Plymouth.
